Composer Noah Agruss works from his studio in Sherman Oaks, California.
Noah is known as a skilled and congenial collaborator whose credits are as varied as his score for the Lionsgate feature FIVE FINGERS (starring Laurence Fishburne and Ryan Phillippe), theater music for children, music for NBC’s broadcast of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and cutting edge pop string arrangements for Vitamin Records and singer-songwriters such as Pixie Lott, Natasha Slayton, Hello Astronaut, Josh Rifkin etc.
"As a small boy, in Northern California, I fell, big-time for music watching the Wizard of Oz on TV," Agruss says. "It wasn't just the songs that caught my attention, though. All of that brilliant underscore and orchestration really opened my ears to beautiful film scoring early on."
In addition to scoring duties, these days Agruss also enjoys bringing rich music to today's kids, writing catchy songs for Children's Musicals, premiering collaborations with the creatives at B Street Theatre, founded in Sacramento by Artistic Director/playwright Buck Busfield and his brother actor/producer Tim Busfield. "It's so gratifying to watch those little faces light up in an audience packed full of kids on opening day," Noah says.
Agruss credits his parents, actors themselves, for supporting him through piano and guitar lessons. He played in jazz and rock bands in High School and studied guitar and jazz theory at Berklee College of Music in Boston, before moving to Hollywood, to work as a studio musician and sound engineer.
"It was at that point that I really dug into 20th century music and film score," as Noah recalls. "“It began to dawn on me that my desire to become a ‘real’ composer was in direct conflict with the glaring gaps in my knowledge of orchestration, form and process."
So, Agruss returned to in-depth studies at San Francisco State University where he found great mentors in Pulitzer Prize winning composer Wayne Peterson, concert band legend Roger Nixon, composer Herb Bielawa and multimedia artist and filmmaker Lynn Hershman-Leeson (Strange Culture and Teknolust starring Tilda Swinton).
There, Agruss also co-founded New Release Alliance, a group of composers staging live performances of new chamber music works.
